Women in Engineering Day Spotlights: Catherine & Monica

In honor of Women in Engineering Day, we’re spotlighting two of our talented engineering professionals, Catherine Warfel and Monica Davis.

CATHERINE WARFEL

Catherine’s career journey began in high school when she discovered her interest in engineering through a drafting class. Inspired by family members in the field and encouraged by her teachers, she decided to pursue a career in engineering. Catherine went on to earn her degree in structural engineering from Ohio University, where she found a strong community through a co-ed engineering fraternity.

She began her career at DEVITA in design, steadily taking on more responsibility and eventually stepping into a leadership role as an Engineering Team Lead. Today, she serves as an Engineering Manager, overseeing the career development, scheduling, and planning functions for the precast division’s engineering professionals.

One project that remains especially meaningful to Catherine is Camperdown Plaza in downtown Greenville, SC. While working at a previous firm, Catherine played a key role in designing the structural elements of this mixed-use development, including both the parking garage and the public plaza that now serves as a vibrant community gathering space.

When asked what advice she would give to young women considering engineering, Catherine offers this insight: “Don’t be afraid to speak up if you have an idea. Ask questions. Find a good mentor. There’s nothing holding you back as a woman in engineering.”

MONICA DAVIS

Monica’s interest in engineering began in high school when a guidance counselor recognized her strengths in math and science and encouraged her to explore STEM fields. This led her to pursue a degree in electrical engineering at Southern University in Louisiana.

She began her career in electrical design and eventually joined DEVITA as a senior electrical designer. A 10-year veteran of DEVITA, she now serves as a Project Manager, leading a team of design professionals.

Throughout the course of her career, the project she’s most proud of is the expansion of Concourse C at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport—a project she designed while at a previous firm.

Reflecting on the industry’s evolution, Monica notes the increasing presence of women in engineering, particularly in leadership and licensed roles. Her advice to the next generation is simple yet powerful: “Know your stuff, give yourself grace, and learn.”

At DEVITA, we celebrate professionals like Catherine and Monica who continue to lead, inspire, and shape the future for women in engineering.
